Named after the Greek god of dreams, the Morpheus is an aluminum percussion instrument made by the US company Freenotes. The instrument is modular; the keys can be rearranged in any order you like, as each metal bar is attached to its own tuned resonator. The instrument is available in several different sizes – the version we sampled is two and a half octaves, with the optional ‘bass Wing’ extension which offers six notes ranging another octave below that of the main unit. The keys are struck with custom mallets, also built by Freenotes, and ring freely afterwards. There is no damping mechanism.

“Extended” is a term usually used to describe unorthodox techniques used when playing a musical instrument in an unconventional way, to coax new timbres from a traditional instrument.

Since the early 20th century, the piano has been at the forefront of this trend, with composers such as John Cage preparing the piano with nuts and bolts, Henry Cowell composing pieces in which the performer reaches inside the piano and plucks or strums the strings, and Stephen Scott bowing the strings with an ensemble of performers to produce an orchestral sound. The latter inspired us to create the ground-breaking Bowed Piano instrument in 2008, and now we have revisited the same piano to build on that concept and further explore extended piano techniques for an exciting new suite of instruments.

A Tingklik is a bamboo percussion instrument from Bali. It’s often used for “Rindik” music, so is sometimes referred to as a Rindik itself. Rindik music usually involves two Tingklik players and a single Suling (bamboo flute).

Tremors is a stunning collection of dark, paranoid, funky and downright unclassifiable drum loops. Ranging from 65 bpm to 150 bpm, the tempos shift, double up on themselves, and then turn themselves inside out. Unclassified Rhythm: We love breakbeats, and we love anything that steps outside of the norm. Dubstep is a melting pot for breakbeat culture, where conventions have not yet been defined, and tempos and structures change from track to track in a way which would not be tolerated by most other genres.The spatial pyrotechnics and atmospherics employed in Tremors will mean that these drum loops will provide inspiration and new direction for Film composers, DJs, electronica producers as well as Dub-heads everywhere.

Soniccouture Kim EXS24 KONTAKT

The Kim is a type of dulcimer or zither from Thailand, and is related to the Chinese yangqin. Sometimes spelled khim, the instrument consists of a flat soundbox with 42 wire strings stretched across in 14 sets of 3. The courses are struck with two thin bamboo mallets with soft leather tips. The Kim is not a very loud instrument, and is typically played with a lot of tremolo. As there is no damping mechanism, the strings ring to their natural decay, and this gives an eerie resonance to the background of a Kim performance. The Kim is used in both solo and ensemble situations.

The Kim was sampled at 24 bit /44.1 and contains 137 seperate unlooped samples. Each note was sampled individually with up to 5 velocity layers, twice, to give an extremely natural, expressive response. This extremely unusual instrument can add an atmospheric edge to all kinds of production, from film scoring to ambient soundscaping to folk.

KSP Tremolo Control Processor

The KIM Kontakt 2 instrument comes with a dedicated KSP script that enables the signature tremolo sound of the Kim when key C1 is held down. The mod wheel controls the velocity and random nature of the tremolo. This feature is not available on the EXS24 version.
