The Alien Drum (aka Hang Drum – trademarked by Pan Art) is a unique tone based percussion instrument, which is almost impossible to come by, since there is only one maker in the world and less than 1000 drums in circulation. The instrument has a soft, sorrowful, melancholic tone to it and is a perfect companion for emotional or ambient type of scores. The Tonehammer Alien Drum is unique in the sense it was recorded at an average of 15 velocity layers and with 10 round-robin repetitions pr. layer/note, so you will never experience any repetition in the articulation. We used custom microphone set-ups to capture the delicate resonance both inside and outside the drum, since the resonance defines the true sound of the drum. Additionally we sampled multiple playing techniques with fingers, palm, slaps, hand brushing and the back-side of the drum, which has the similar properties to the Udu. Multiple versions of all multis allow for a variety of ways to switch or fade between articulations while playing.

The “Cylindrum” is a massive custom built tuned percussion instrument ranging over 4 octaves, so a percussionists dream come true. We spent over two years figuring out how to build and record the whole thing, since there is a rather complicated set of mathematics behind cutting and tuning all of the pipes to create each note. It operates using the principle of open and closed air column resonance. Overall, it sounds like some kind of strange organic synthesizer morphed into a broad array of tuned tom-toms.

Each pipe produces sound of one fixed pitch, so they are provided in sets with one pipe or more per note, each set or stop having a common timbre and loudness throughout. The Lakeside Organ has multiple sets of pipes of differing timbre, pitch and loudness which the player can employ singly or in combination. The actual organ is made from three keyboards, played by the hands, and a pedal board for bass notes, played by the feet, each of which controls its own group of stops. We carefully recorded the organ at a variety of different settings, which allows the user to control the timbre of the organ. We recorded five different settings comparably from PP to FF. All settings recorded at two microphone positions (close/far), so user have ultimately flexibility between 10 different organ settings. Additionally we realized that many other organ sample libraries use noise reduction, which gives a more polished/clinical sound to the organ. We decided to take the opposite approach and allow all the air sounds in the library, since a variety of the “noise” is the air produced by the pipes. This means that the organ has a more full and airy sound (especially in softer settings), which gives a more emotional expression.

To call tabla a mere percussion instrument would be a vast understatement of its musical depth, as one of the most revered of all classical Indian musical instruments. We worked with tabla master and jazz percussionist Sameer Gupta to capture a range of tabla rhythm, melody and soul. Sameer has bee a student and practitioner in the art of percussion for nearly 25 years, traveling the world to study and perform in some of the world’s most prestigious institutions and venues. The Tonehammer Bamboo Stick Ensemble is a powerful display of how far you can take a simple musical ingredient like bamboo poles, which provides a powerful clack sounds when they are smashed together and … serves as great tuned based instrument when (mis)treated the right way. Our Bamboo Stick Ensemble was recorded using a variety of 6′ long 2″ diameter Chinese bamboo poles. We were blown by the power of these sticks, since they made sounds we have never remotely encountered before. The impacts are powerful and sharp. They compliment our Tom Ensembles perfectly. The sustains were created by grinding the poles against wet and dry tile. Sometimes shrill, sometimes brassy and always freakin’ creepy. Great for horror and dark, dramatic ethnic scoring.

The African whale drum (or Tongue Drum) is a wonderful wooden
tone-based percussion instrument with a warm marimba like tone. The
whale drum is based on the traditional African slit drums, which is
made by carving out \u201cslits\u201d in a hollow piece of wood, which helps
bring more resonance to the instrument.

Welcome to our Bamblong (tuned bamboo log drum). The Bamblong is a small tuned percussion instrument, similar in principle to a marimba. It has 4 bamboo resonance chambers, roughly ranging between 1½ – 2¼ inches wide and 8 – 14 inches long, with sound holes in the top of each. The playing surfaces are thin bamboo planks, suspended on pegs over each bamboo log. It came with a set of mallets with flat, round heads that appear to be carved out of bicycle tire. It has a very crisp yet mellow, raspy note with a short sustain.
