ChineeHuluSi: The Riveting Bottle Gourds from the South of Clouds. HuluSi is a free-reed wind instrument from China. “Hulu” is the Chinese name for bottle gourd; “Si”, silk, is used here to describe the unrelenting characteristic of HuluSi’s vibrating tail tone. The history of HuluSi is not well documented other than that it may have been used by the ethnic minorities in the nowadays Yunnan (literally means “South of Clouds”) province for a very, very long time, maybe as long as a thousand years. Today, HuluSi is the most representative instrument of Yunnan and in recent years it has been improved, spread and promoted, both at the domestic and international levels, and received good recognition. HuluSi is especially known for its unrelenting, yet soft, tone.

Suona (the Chinese shawm) was originated from Persia and then slowly adopted by the Chinese in the course of history. By the time of the Ming Dynasty (14th – 17th century), Suona is documented as a prevalent instrument in China. Suona is rather unique. It is sort of a crossover between brass and woodwind instruments.

Pipa (Chinese Lute) dates back to the Qin Dynasty (221-206BC). As Pipa evolved, it was heavily influenced by Persian culture during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD), when the two great civilizations crossed over with each other, and became one of the most popular instruments in China ever since then. As Pipa prospered in the most powerful Chinese dynasty, it left tremendous markings in the Chinese literature and culture. Pipa is most well-known for its rapid, successive playing style. A famous quote from a Chinese poem has it nailed: “the pearls, large and small, on a jade plate fall.

The Melancholic Sound from China. Nanxiao (Southern Xiao) is a bamboo flute of the Xiao family. Unlike Dizi, Xiao has no membrane. Nanxiao is mostly popular in the Fujian area of southern China. Like the Japanese Shakuhachi, NanXiao is the offspring of ChiBa and DongXiao from the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD). Contrary to the upbeat, happy-trigger sound of Dizi, NanXiao has a more solid yet soothing tone that blends into modern music easily. For any composer who needs something different yet not really digging ethnic music, NanXiao is a welcome addition to the sound palette. The sound character of Xiao is of something more saddened, battered, and is filled with a melancholic mood. It represents a lesser-known spirit in Chinese music, and that is why we bring out ChineeNanXiao as a featured product. The role of NanXiao will no doubt be elevated in the music world once it is properly introduced to the composers in the whole world.

Rippling and Dreamy Guzheng, as one of the most representative Chinese instruments, first appeared around the Warring States period (475 – 221 BC), then became extremely popular during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD) and spread to all neighboring areas ever since (e.g., Guzheng is the forefather of Japanese Koto). Guzheng was originally a rather simple instrument with only five strings. After all the years of evolution, today’s Guzheng has twenty-one strings and is still widely used in all kinds of Chinese music. Guzheng has a unique, rippling sound character. The playing techniques developed for Guzheng are also unique and distinct, therefore set it apart from any other members in the world’s zither family. Extraordinary Live Performance Playability ChineeGuzheng has an extensive sampleset which contains various types of tremolo, slide, glissando, and strumming. The note range is from A2 to G7 (for most patches). Coupled with Kong Audio’s professional arrangement which has been highly complimented by various magazine reviews, playing with ChineeGuzheng is an inspiring and enjoyable experience. Like all Kong Audio plugins, instead of a dead set of rigid samples, ChineeGuzheng is marked with unparalleled playability which hasn’t been achieved before in the Chinese instrument libraries.

ChineeErhu. Traditional Chinese two-strings bowed instrument captured for the first time. Being here, to be there… Erhu is a bowed instrument with two strings, originally dated back to Tang Dynasty(7th century A.D.), and is still being widely used today all over China in all kinds of music, from movie scores to opera. It’s one of the most representative classical Chinese instruments nowadays. It’s also very popular in the whole Asia. Erhu has a special synthetic flavour which is drastically different from the Western violin. Whilst violin sounds like a splendid soprano in a grand musical, Erhu tells her life story in a hoarse tone from the dark alley. This gives Erhu an unique sound character that’s like nothing else.

The Mongolian Vibe from the Steppes MaTouQin (horse-headed fiddle, aka morin khuur), as one of the precious legacies of the Mongolian people, has been heartily embraced by Chinese musicians today as a vital musical element. Its unique sound character complements other classical Chinese instruments in a way like no others. MaTouQin is believed to be originated from the nomadic people during the Tang Dynasty (7th – 10th centuries), and became widely known circa Genghis Khan’s reign. Nowadays, like many other Mongolian legacies, Matouqin has become a valuable part of Chinese culture. Besides the horse-headed pegbox, MaTouQin is very recognizable for its unusual playing techniques and styles. Our production approached MaTouQin in pursuit of the indigenous flavour instead of the more Westernized style, and by delivering that flavour, all the composers and musicians now have a chance to explore and express in the most authentic and original Mongolian flavour easily.
