The X5D is an entry level keyboard from Korg. It basically offers Korg’s acclaimed Ai2 sound engine (from the 01/w series) packed into a small, lightweight, affordable package! Being an entry-level keyboard, the usual luxuries such as aftertouch and an internal power supply have been omitted, and it lacks an arpeggiator or a sequencer, however it more than makes up for this in sound.sounds of your own. The preset sounds vary widely, from complex pads and magesy SFX sounds, to pianos, organs and orchestral instruments. Some of these sound dated in this day and age, the piano sound is a little on the thin side to say the least, but the string, pad and organ sounds can still hold their own against much newer keyboards! Korg have even included some classic voices from their iconic M1 workstation. The famous ‘Universe’ and ‘M1 Piano’ sounds are present in the X5D.

Once again, Germany’s premier orchestral team unites to bring the sounds of the orchestra to your sampler. The statistics of this release are impressive: a 16-violin ensemble performs around 3500 different licks and 200 multisamples, spread across four CDs. The idea is to provide a library of useful phrases for pop and dance production. There are three main phrase categories: first, and most obvious, are fast (mainly 16th-note) runs, which come in four flavours: straight ascending, straight descending, ‘sawtooth’ and ‘wavy’ ascending, the latter based on a rising series of four fast up-and-down phrases. Next come rather solemn slow phrases, of which there are two types: an arpeggio figure spanning ten scale steps, and a rising phrase based on the first five notes of the scale. All fast runs and slow phrases are based on the major scale, and all come to rest on a final half note.

Korg Universe Vol.1 AKAi

Korg Universe Volume 1 is from the German company Back in Time Records who specialise in the production of sample CD’s of older classic synths, we have also reviewed Minimoog Classics and Korg Universe Volume 2. Korg Universe 1 is the companion volume to Volume 2 and covers the sounds produced from 17 Korg synthesisers and drum machines, from classic mono synths like the 700S to the Wavestation AD. There is no duplication with Volume 2 and I’d find it hard to think of anything produced by Korg in the 1970-91 period that isn’t covered by one of these sample CD’s.

Legendary M400 AKAi

On this sample CD find 7 sets of the most famous sounds from the legendary M400 and additional one set of custom designed really mad FX sounds. Because the M400 is a monophonic instrument this Sample CD is organized in that way, that you hear allways two samples at the same time, one on the left channel and the other on the right, with the same IDs for the same note. At the beginning of each new set you hear a short demo to give an impression how it will sound when you have finished (for the demo I used these samples, not the original!). The M400 has 35 keys, each with it’s own tape recorded. On this CD one complete set consists also of 35 mono samples. The single sounds have a max. lenght of 9s. The range for every set is G1 – F4. By changing the channels you choose the sounds you are going record. You can use a denoiser for sampling, but this will destroy the original ‘dirty’ sound. Because of age and tape quality slight pitch alterations or short dropouts may occur in some samples. Although I think this makes the charme of this instrument, you should take the neighbour sample and tune it, if you want to have a more ‘perfect’ set. To get a realistic sound of the M400, it is more important to have as many samples as possible than to have less but longer samples.
