REiMAGiNE THE ViOLiN

Created for both musical use and sound design, Violence features an unprecedented deconstruction of a solo violin recorded from numerous angles: bowed, scraped, hit, plucked, played with mallets, chopsticks, guitar picks, and wet fingers. Then the sound design was repitched, layered, and post-processed through an array of unusual tools to produce sounds unlike any found in other virtual instruments. More than eighty unique patches were designed, each with a custom set of scripted knobs and controls all conveniently organized into four categories of sounds: Drum Kits, Melodic, Pads and Sound Effects, and Tempo-Synced. The inspiration for Violence came from the influential American composer John Cage, whose extensive experiments with prepared piano yielded new timbres and effects. What Cage did on the piano, Violence brings to the violin: a new and unorthodox approach to a traditional instrument, yielding amazing and fresh new instruments, textures, and sound design elements. Violence combines physical alterations with digital manipulations for a sound that straddles acoustic and electronic realms.

Designed with some of the most expressive cello compositions in mind, the goal behind this instrument was clear: to deliver a powerful and rich vibrato, as well as a legato capable of expressing all the nuances required by this musical aesthetic. To accomplish this, Balvi Cello offers a variety of attacks and multiple sustain options for the legato, two types of legato transitions, and, of course, rebows. To prevent the phasing effect and blurriness that crossfading between dynamic layers can cause, especially in solo instruments, Balvi Cello has been designed with a single dynamic layer system. By combining various sustain options, it offers a multiple performance possibilities, allowing you to achieve the nuance and emotional depth needed for your music. The various attacks and legato sustains are activated based on the velocity you use (0, 41, 91) In addition to the standard legato transitions, the instrument also includes a set of fast transitions up to a major second, ideal for performing runs and certain musical passages that demand greater playing speed.

Warm Bassy Plucks

The Gimbri is a three-stringed skin-covered bass that originated in Morocco. It is actually a lute that produces rich deep but also somewhat harsh and earthy tones through its wooden body and goat gut strings. Often compared to a bass guitar, the gimbri brings deepness into the music with its low dynamic range. The main focus was to capture different articulations of the Gimbri while keeping its organic feeling and warm sound. Traditionally played with the fingers, we recorded it muted, with a plec and through an amp to ensure a wide variety of tones. It comes with five presets, while the possibility of custom settings is kept open.

Richard Taylor sampled many analog synths and released the results into the Public Domain. bigcat instruments has started turning them into Kontakt instruments. Thanks to scripts and GUI from Mickaël Ménager, each synth will feature effects such as distortion and compression along with built in amp simulation. The first Taylor sampled synth, the Axis 80 has just been released. It has over 2500 samples and weighs in at a touch under 2 gigs compressed.

Cello Ibrida contains different types of sampling and sound design techniques inside one advanced GUI. The concept relies on not focusing on a single traditional library concept but several that when combined will bring out modern sounds that retain an organic sound. A cello section was recorded to do “texture” articulations and multisample. From there we edited and processed a variety of sound design style patches to create low pulses, hybrid plucks, pads and sfx. Our matrix GUI contains a two layer system each with its own effects chain, LFOs, Sequencer and gate. But the magic happens in the performance matrix page where two macros, two envelope sequencers and velocity source modulators can be individually assigned to different master effects, chord maker and a detuner. This enables even the simplest of sounds to be continuously modulated and ever changing. Additionally, we added CC assignable inputs for crossfade, macro1/2 and LFO rate/amount to let composers modulate all these parameters in real time and thus, creating a great performance sound design instrument.
