A felt piano, reimagined into beautiful ambient soundscapes

Building on the success of Tureis for Kontakt, I’ve now recreated Tureis for the free Soundbox player. Tureis is an Instrument close to my heart, featuring three deeply evocative presets perfect for creating emotional ambient soundscapes. I created Tureis using our beloved Yamaha U1 upright felt piano, an instrument that has been part of our family for many years. Renowned for its rich, resonant sound and impeccable craftsmanship, the Yamaha U1 is a favorite among pianists for its expressive, warm tonal quality and responsive touch. Situated in the middle of our lounge, it’s always ready to be played, filling our home with music and memories. To capture the essence of Tureis, I recorded single notes and phrases with two microphones positioned just 15cm above the hammers, with the felt pedal engaged. I then set about recording the intimate, warm sounds that make this piano so special.

The 1971 Estonia Grand Piano is a comprehensively deep-sampled soviet-era Grand Piano. The Estonia Piano line is known as the secret Steinway of Eastern Europe – with a uniquely dark, emotional, and melancholic characteristic. The Estonia Grand contains both Sustains, Staccato and Plucked articulations, which can seamlessly be tailored together based on your compositional needs. The short note staccatos were recorded with 5 RR pr. velocity layer – offering you the ability to play incredibly fast licks with clear definition on the attack of the sound. The 1971 Estonia Grand Piano also contains our latest Chaos FX designed for sound design. We included many of our new custom Textural Convolution Delays, which gives the instrument the ability to delay textures from other non-piano sound sources.

Wurlybird 140B is  first sample-based electro-acoustic virtual instrument, modeled after the 1964 Wurlitzer 140B, considered by many to be the crown jewel of the legendary Wurlitzer electric piano family. Though the 200-series models are more widely known — and often emulated — many devoted Wurly enthusiasts believe the 140B to have superior action and tone quality. Wurlybird 140B has been crafted by Cherry Audio through deep expert sampling of a professionally restored 140B, along with subtle randomization of key release and pedal sounds, precision modeling of the original preamp, faithfully emulated vibrato/tremolo, and even adjustable background hum. Additionally, Wurlybird 140B includes a broad spectrum of tonal-enhancing stompbox-style effects, ranging from subtle to extreme.
