UFO Tone is a multi-sampled metallic tuned percussion library that encapsulates a special hang drum from another realm. This one checks all three boxes. We may have found this artifact halfway buried in a field, like it was dropped off from an extraterrestrial visit… After cleaning it off, we took it to St. Paul’s Church in San Francisco – the same location we sampled Requiem Light Choir, Symphony Series Brass, and Alpha Organ. We used a mallet to record its eight tongues with a close stereo pair of Neumann studio mics for a dry and present sound, as well as a second stereo pair 15 feet away for an open, spacious far sound. You can chromatically solo, combine or layer the different articulations, tongues and mic positions to create your own unique sonic blends. Steel tongue drums are known for a smooth fundamental tone wrapped in a haze of complex harmonics, lush swirling overtones, and a long, mellow sustain. Buckle your seatbelt! UFO Tone will launch you out of this world.

KeyTone is a dual voice keyboard sounds ROMpler. Our starting point here was that the world doesn’t need another multi-gig multi-sampled grand piano ROMpler, nor does it need more Rhodes or Whirlitzer instruments. Those bases are pretty much covered. Instead we wanted to make a quick and easy-to-use ROMpler that would let you define your own unique piano/keys sounds. There are the over 200 instruments sampled and included in KeyTone these were meticulously recorded, edited and mastered using our analogue valve based system, including passing each sound through our dedicated 1970’s Akai valve pre-amp and then copying everything through our Revox B77 tape machine loaded with vintage (but pristine) British Zonal 675 tape. It’s a long, slow process but we think the resulting sounds are worth it. Setting up and using new sounds in KeyTone couldn’t be simpler – we’ve spent a long time refining our Voice Randomisation engine to the point where new and interesting sounds are just one click (of the Voice Randomising button) away.

Something that was weirdly great about the 80s was the emergence of “things that are also other things”. For example: pencil erasers that also smell of candy. Or toy cars that are also toy robots. Or school calculators that are also tiny synthesisers. Casio’s VL Tone series of calculators really embodied an oddball notion taken to extremes: once you’ve solved the square on the hypotenuse as being equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides of the triangle, why not kick back with some funky toonz? (Luckily there was a headphone jack built in, so that the surprisingly loud two-inch speaker didn’t distract the rest of the class from their studies.) Not only were there six preset sounds to fool around with, you could even – get this – program your own, by inputting laborious strings of numbers with the calculator switched to a special mode. With control over envelope, tone shape, vibrato and so on, you could come up with your own VL Tone patches, in a move which Casio presumably hoped was a kind of gateway drug to their bigger, more professional keyboards.
